In observance of Labor Day, the SELCO office will be closed on Monday, September 6. There will be no Automation Support that day. Also, there will be no delivery service on Monday - a regular Monday delivery schedule will take place on Tuesday that week. Delivery to schools will begin on Wednesday, September 8.
SELCO officially welcomes Sherry Mooers to Minnesota as the new Library Director in Lake City. Sherry has more than 12 years of library management experience, including 7.5 years as a library director. Her work experiences also include management of a non-profit organization and coordinating a state task force in 43 counties. Sherry holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from Kent State University. In 2007 Sherry was honored by her peers in the Mississippi Library Association with the Outstanding Library Achievement Award and again in 2008 with MLA’s Public Relations Award.
Ann Hutton and Sherry Mooers
Ann Hutton, SELCO Executive Director, visited Sherry on August 25 and kicked--off a series of orientation sessions outlining SELCO organizational structure and services. Ann’s visit will be followed up with information about technology and information services shared by Donovan Lambright, Automation Librarian. SELCO Assistant Director, Michael Scott, will continue the discussion with Sherry within the next few weeks offering information about children’s and adult programming support, training and library advocacy.
On August 23, 2010, SELCO implemented an email user alert service available from MnLINK. Now, your library patrons who use MnLINK and have a valid email address in their Horizon patron record will receive an email alert when a MnLINK request is unable to be filled (non-supplied) by a participating MnLINK library. This alert will allow your library patrons to receive information about any of their MnLINK requests that are unfilled and will cut down on the amount of paper you receive from us via your Delivery tub! For more information, check out this document posted to SELCO's Interlibrary Loan page that explains this change.
Four scholarship recipients will attend the annual conference for the Minnesota Library Association (MLA) this fall. The conference will be held in Rochester, October 6-8, 2010. Each winner has agreed to share impressions of the conference via the SELCO Librarian . The 2010 SELCO-MLA Scholarship winners are:
Today was the first day that the new notices forms were used for the 24 libraries that have SELCO process their notices. 434 print notices were generated, folded and stamped for mailing this afternoon, in addition to the 1272 notices and pre-overdue notices emailed out to patrons. Photos of the new equipment and staff in action are on our flickr account .
A new post went up on Friday on the Online Catalog page outlining several enhancements coming to the catalog in the coming weeks. Along with a new interface for links to resources such as MnLink and My Accounts are a number of new links, including the Suggest a Title webform and local resources for individual Online Libraries. Check it out.
9:36 AM -- We are experiencing technical problems preventing Online Libraries from accessing Horizon. SELCO staff are in the office working on a resolution. Updates will be posted here as well as in email to Online Library Directors and Automation Contacts.
The front doors to the SELCO office were moved 90 degrees from facing south to west as the remodeling project continues. Additional windows were added to fill the hole in the building which creates a bright and inviting entryway. Still to come – more plaster, paint, tile and a ceiling for the exterior entrance. Follow the progress with our Flickr thumbnail photos .
Work steadily continues on the remodeling project at the SELCO office. The window has been removed and space created for the double doors. Two concrete pours are complete which added the new foundation and entryway. Yet to come is the approach to the building. Keep an eye on the progress by checking our Flickr thumbnails .
As anyone who entered the SELCO building last winter will remember, everyone had to navigate icicles dangling from the roof and skate on the icy sidewalk. With the encouragement of our insurance provider and the approval of the SELCO/SELS Board of Directors, SELCO undertakes a small remodeling job.
The project will shift the front door 90 degrees from the current south-facing entrance to the west side under the existing covered walkway. (Interestingly, the original building plans had the door under the walkway facing west.) The shallow overhang over the front door makes for a very wet entrance on a rainy day and, as experienced each winter, a slippery escapade when there is snow and ice. Throughout the years we have added eave troughs, investigated heat--tape, re-directed downspouts, seasonally adjust and re-adjusted eave troughs, caulked and re-caulked the crack between eave trough and soffit. Despite setting out orange cones to alert people to the conditions, we still had numerous falls.
Work began on Monday, August 2, with the removal of the Nova Brick which will be reused. Excavation equipment arrived this morning so construction begins in earnest.
Using signboards borrowed from several public libraries, there is information directing visitors to the east side delivery door which will be the temporary entrance during construction. The remodeling project should take 4 – 6 weeks.
The National Poetry Slam (NPS) is the largest team performance poetry event in the world. Teams from all over North America, as well as other countries will be in St. Paul for a week of poetry, revelry and competition. A great opportunity to check out SELCO's recently released poetry anthology - Poetic Strokes.
Buckham Memorial Library Youth Services Librarian Frances Veit has an article in the Summer 2010 issue of Young Adult Library Services (YALS), the official journal of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). The article, Absolutely True Experiences of Two New Librarians: The Importance of Popular Literature in Educating Young Adult Librarians, offers tips for new YA librarians, examines the critical nature of including popular lit in grad school, and lists some great resources for popular literature selection. Frances and her graduate school friend, Fumiko Osada, co-wrote the article. Way to go, Frances!!

What this means is that your materials must be at the SELCO office or postmarked no later than the monthly due date in order to be eligible for consideration. When the deadline falls on a Sunday, you'll need to be sure that those documents are postmarked the day before (Saturday the 24th) in order to remain eligible for funding. Also, as of July 1st, 2010 (the start of our Fiscal Year 2011), all applications for Community Collaboration grants must include at least one partner organization. For more information, please visit the Community Collaboration page, or contact Abbey Thompson-Chapel .
SELCO accepted the first submission of artwork for the EASEL 2010-2011 inaugural tour. All of the artwork in the first ever traveling art show will depict the artist's celebration of a book, letter or letters, authors, reading or the library. The EASEL exhibit will visit 15 libraries in southeastern Minnesota, and will be displayed to the public for one year beginning in October 2010. But before the art can be on the move, members of SEMVA will serve as judges to select those pieces for inclusion in the exhibit.
Artwork may be submitted at the SELCO office from 9:00am to 5:00 pm, Monday, July 19 - Friday, July 23 and again Monday, July 26 - Saturday, July 31. The 2-D artwork must measure 12 x 12 inches, including frame and be gallery ready. The 3D pieces may only be a maximum of 12 x 12 x 12 inches and at least one of those dimensions must be 12 inches.
Great news! Minnesota's Greatest Generation (MGG) Kits are now available to book for programming and focus on events and activities for the generation of Americans who grew up in the Depression, fought in World War II, and brought along the Boom in prosperity after. There are four types of kits available: Film Festival Kit, Trivia Contest Kit, Craft Kits, and Family Day Kits. Each kit contains programming ideas, contents lists, craft supplies and evaluations. Requests for MGG Kits must be made by e-mail. These kits were created by staff working for the Minnesota Historical Society and Minnesota's Regional Library Systems. This project was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage fund. For booking and other information, please click here .
The issue with accessing SELCO Vendor Databases from outside of SELCO has been resolved. Some on line sites and patrons from outside the libraries may still experience problems connecting today. The updated DNS information needs to propagate across the Internet to the various Internet Service Provider’s DNS Servers. This is a process that can take anywhere from 24 – 48 hours. Last night from home on Charter’s network I was able to connect to the SELCO Vendor Databases so DNS propagation already started to occur.
It seems that the work done by DTI this afternoon, while solving a number of issues, has introduced a problem with authentication for the Research Databases. As a result, they are unavailable at Online Libraries and for patrons on the internet. We have contacted DTI and are working with them to resolve the problem.
The Rochester Arts Council presents its second annual ARTigras, an arts and cultural festival on Saturday, August 21. More than 100 juried artisans will be onsite selling their wares and demonstrating their craft. The event offers fun for the family, activities for kids, free entertainment, and food vendors offering culinary treats.
DTI has finished their DNS work and calls to Online Libraries who have contacted us show (so far) that services are now functioning normally. Since these problems were sporadic, it is possible that there may still be Online Libraries experiencing problems of which we are not aware. If your library is still unable to access any SELCO services that were working earlier in the day, please contact the SELCO Help Desk. In most cases, any such lingering problems will be fixed as local ISP DNS servers update themselves. Nevertheless, we will check up on any continuing problems Online Libraries might still be experiencing.
DTI, SELCO's Internet Service Provider (ISP), is carrying out some modifications of their Domain Name Server (DNS) records for SELCO. As a result, we are seeing outages of some SELCO services this morning. Anything that requires connecting to a website could be affected at some or all Online Libraries. This includes such services as the Automation portal, placing requests through iPac via the Online Catalog, or using the SELCO website.
We are in touch with DTI as they work to resolve these issues. Updates will be posted to this website and will be sent out as email to Automation Contacts and Directors.
SELCO staff received a letter of thanks and appreciation from Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty for sending him a copy of the 2010 Poetic Strokes anthology and for the work to promote reading and literature in the state of Minnesota. To see a full-color scanned copy of the letter, please click here .
Our thanks to everyone who called in and who worked with us this morning when requesting was not available. With your help and with the assistance of SirsiDynix, we have restored requests and the ability to log in. We appreciate your patience.
WordPress training and a new version of Cataloging I & II have been added to the training calendar. WordPress will be offered July 22nd. Cataloging will begin being offered again in the fall.
Requests in the Online Catalog appear to be working now. As this functionality is dependent upon DNS propagation, there may be variation in when it is restored for different Online Libraries. If patron-placed requests are not working at your library, please contact the SELCO Help Desk . This will help us track the changes.
Partial functionality has been restored to the iPac. This means:
1) Requests placed in the Horizon staff client (aka Staff PAC) are now working normally. It is possible that some Online Libraries will have to log out of the client and log back in first. If requests don't seem to be working, try that first.
2) Patrons can use the My Account button in the online catalog (aka AquaBrowser) to perform account functions such as renewals and paying fines.
3) Requests placed in the online catalog are not functioning as of now, 11:16 AM. Changes to DNS have been made that should restore that functionality in 30 to 45 minutes. We'll post an update when we've verified that this function is working.
As always, please contact the SELCO Help Desk if your experience are at odds with this information.
The issue with Pharos stemming for our weekend network upgrade has been resolved. Each library will need to restart their signup server to restore normal functionality. In the event, that restarting the signup server does not restore Pharos, please contact the SELCO Help Desk .
As previously announced , we took the opportunity presented by the Independence Day weekend to perform a major upgrade to the internet connection in the SELCO office. While not without a few bumps along the way, this upgrade was successful. As of today, however, there are a handful of issues we are still resolving.
1) Horizon is functioning normally for the most part, although one of our Citrix servers is not talking to the network. This means that attempts to log in to Horizon via automation.selco.info will fail periodically with an error message referencing a XenApp server not being available. If this happens at your library, simply acknowledge the error and try clicking Horizon again. So far, in every case we've seen, the second attempt has been successful.
2) More seriously, the Horizon iPac server is not yet communicating with the rest of the network. This means that it is not possible to place requests, since all requests functionality for Horizon is in that server. This includes requests placed through the staff client. We are in touch with SirsiDynix today to resolve this issue. When you first login to the Horizon staff client, you'll see an error message referencing the "middle tier" not being available. This message is referring to iPac. When you see it, simply click OK and the Horizon software will work normally for non-requests functions.
3) Our old Pharos server is not communicating with the network meaning that Pharos is not functional for Online Libraries using the old server. The new upgraded server is working normally. Fortunately, only one Online Library using Pharos is open today and they are on the new server. We hope to have this issue resolved by the time Online Libraries open tomorrow.
Updates on these issues will be posted as they become available.
In observance of Independence Day, the SELCO office will be closed on Monday, July 5, 2010. There will be no Automation support on Sunday or Monday. There will be no delivery on Monday. A regular Monday delivery will take place on Tuesday that week.
The order form for the Summer 2010 Cooperative PC Purchase has been released and emailed to Online Library Directors and Automation Contacts. The deadline for orders is Friday, July 30, with SELCO placing orders in the first week of August. Equipment installations will be carried out as orders arrive.
Next Wednesday is the ALA Virtual Conference. Register here to attend at the SELCO office with your colleagues before it is too late. Find a list of the programs available on the ALA wiki .
This Independence Day weekend, the SELCO office internet connection will be upgraded from approximately 4.5MB to 10MB. We are excited to be able to improve the speed of the connection that Online Libraries use to access Horizon, AquaBrowser, Pharos, and other key services. Like any major infrastructure project, however, there will be some short-term bumps along the way. I'd like to take a moment to let you at the Online Libraries know what we're doing and what you should expect.
As announced earlier, SELCO has been in negotiations with OverDrive to begin offering the public libraries online with the SELCO ILS the capacity to “buy-into” a cooperative purchase for downloadable titles. I am pleased to announce an agreement with Overdrive was signed this week for their Digital Library Reserve, a collection of digital content including eBooks and downloadable audio books. SELCO staff will add to their ongoing task list the job of getting participating libraries connected in the coming weeks.
A copy of the details including your annual price to participate is attached to this post. Paper copies are in your delivery bin for shipment on Monday, 06-28-2010. As you know, the budget you recommended for approval at the June Advisory Committee included a SELCO contribution of $10,000 towards this new Value Added Service and a cooperative purchase for Overdrive technology and content. Public Libraries online with SELCO may "buy-in" for a fee calculated on city population of 10 cents per potential user and a base contribution of $115 per library. One-half of each library’s value added fee will be used to license the technology required to host and offer e-content and one half of the fee will be used to purchase titles. Libraries can opt to contribute additional funds to add more content to the shared collection.
Make your voice heard, even if you can't make it to Washington, D.C. tomorrow for Library Advocacy Day! There are still many of opportunities to get involved. Please show your support for libraries this week by participating in Virtual Library Advocacy Week. This event, which will be held in conjunction with Library Advocacy Day, will be the biggest show of library advocacy on a federal level in the history of the American Library Association. Your voice will raise awareness about the important work that libraries and library staff do on a daily basis. A simple phone call or e-mail is all it takes. To send an email, please click here and click on the issue you are interested in. The website will take you to a sample form letter. Take the time to personalize it and share stories about what's going on at your own library. These examples truly matter to your elected officials. If you'd like to speak with your elected official, please call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your member of Congress. Help support libraries! Your phone calls and emails can really make a difference!
The Minnesota Library Association, as a part of its Annual Conference, recognizes the contributions of Association members and others who have worked to improve library services throughout the state. Information about the awards and the work of the Awards Committee can be found at www.mnlibraryassociation.org/about-mla/awards. Should you wish to nominate someone to receive an MLA award, you will find a convenient online nomination form through the same page. The deadline for nominations is August 20, 2010.
Cheryl Hill and James Hill, directors of the Pine Island and Zumbrota Public Libraries, were kind enough to share with us their experiences hosting a successful Library Legacy project.
We contacted an artist, Greg Preslicka, who has a company called "The Big Picture" - http://www.thebigpicturemurals.net/ He visited our libraries and we talked about options and what we wanted to see for murals at our respective libraries. In Zumbrota, we chose a section of wall near our Young Adult section that we have been developing over the past year. In PI, they chose to paint a mural from the top of the stairway all the way downstairs and covering the walls of the lower level of Pine Island Library. Greg and his wife, Heidi, were very easy to work with. They offered presentations to the community while painting the murals. In Pine Island, the community voted on specific themes and characters the wanted to see in the mural, and these were worked into the designs. Greg and Heidi also helped write up the overview for the grant application that we submitted for legacy funds. Greg came up with conceptual designs for both libraries, and we chose the mural we liked best (In Zumbrota, I had my board vote on the design).
The murals turned out extremely well, and we were very pleased with the project, and excited to share the outcome with everyone. As Cheryl says, "It was such a wonderful experience that I have to say it was worth all the time and hard work. The best part of my day now is when people see the mural for the first time and I hear them go 'oh look there's Horton, there's the hungry caterpillar, there's Charlotte web'. Just the pure excitement from the kids and the nostalgia from the adults makes my day".
I've attached a couple photos of the work in progress and the final product. Pine Island has several photos on their flickr account off their website: http://pineisland.lib.mn.us/
If you are thinking of a mural at your library, I highly recommend these artists.

The 2010 MLA Legislative Forum is an opportunity for library employees, Trustees, Friends, and other advocates to begin planning for 2011. All members of MLA and/or MEMO, as well as others in the Minnesota library community, are encouraged to attend. 2011 is a budgeting year at the Legislature and looks to be challenging on many fronts, from funding shifts and potential budget deficits to the continuation of Legacy funding for libraries, the potential impact of the Office of the Legislative Auditors report on public libraries, and newly elected (or re-elected) legislative and gubernatorial officials.
How will the Minnesota library community respond to these challenges? A good start is to come to St. Cloud in July 2010 and be part of the conversation. Spend the day with your colleagues from around the state and help determine MLA and MEMOs legislative platform priorities. Bring your enthusiasm, ideas, concerns, and solutions to help move Minnesota libraries forward. Lunch and refreshments are included. Free Wi-Fi is available.

Minitex Director, Bill DeJohn, created this meaningful graphic that shows the journey of a student from pre-kindergarten through the K-12 educational system and either into the workforce or on to a higher education institution. Along the way, school, academic, and public libraries are all available to provide services to the student and parents in support of learning and information literacy. This graphic was developed after attendance at various P-20 meetings where it seemed important to show that libraries play an important role throughout the life of students and adults. Minnesota libraries collaborate in sharing services and resources. Once in the workforce, information continues to be available through the public library for lifelong learning and recreation activities.
This week, the SELCO Legacy Review Committee allocated a total of $63,986 for 4 Library Legacy projects affecting 14 communities. Congratulations to this month's grant recipients - remember, the next grant round deadline is Tuesday, May 25! Vetted Programs can be applied for at any time and are awarded on a weekly basis.

Austin Public Library, with the Paramount Theater
Rose Ensemble Community Concert
The Rose Ensemble will perform a 50-minute evening concert at the Paramount Theater, in conjunction with an educational workshop at the library that same the afternoon (a SELCO Vetted Program). This performance hopes to encourage first-time concert-goers, particularly families with children. The workshop is titled "Il Poverello: The Life & Deeds of St. Francis of Assisi", featuring an incredible variety of choral and instrumental music written by Franciscan composers or telling stories of St. Francis’ life, his deeds, his love of the earth and its creatures. The singers will perform some of the earliest medieval polyphony, including pieces written for up to eight individual voice parts. The Rose Ensemble instrumentalists will be joined by Isacco Colombo, a guest artist from Milan who will play the cornamusa (early Italian bagpipes), pipe and tabor, and recorder.
This Rose Ensemble program will be free to the public and give Austin area residents an unparalleled opportunity to experience music that they would otherwise not hear in a concert venue that is normally beyond the financial means of many families in the community. The Rose Ensemble program is an excellent way to tap into the community's long standing interest in music as a way to enhance the ongoing dialogues on race, culture, and tolerance.

GRSF Library Ticket Program
The Great River Shakespeare Festival (GRSF) is a professional, 501(c)3 organization with a core company of professional actors, directors, and designers that performs in the summer months in Winona, Minnesota. GRSF is committed to developing a sense of ownership between the Festival and its host community, as well as to expanding the Festival’s regional and national audience.
The goal of the GRSF Library Ticket Program is to reduce or eliminate barriers to the Festival experience, thereby increasing access to the Festival’s work for all Minnesotans and help fulfill the Festival’s goal of increased participation in education and community outreach programs. The GRSF Library Ticket Program will bring quality arts programming to traditionally underserved audiences in 14 Minnesota communities. The Library Ticket Program removes financial barriers by offering either free tickets available for daily "checkout" through partnering libraries, or blocks of tickets and transportation to the Festival for those libraries that identify distance and ability to drive as barriers to access.
The GRSF Library Ticket Program will expand participation in three SELCO libraries that have implemented successful library ticket programs in previous seasons (Winona, Rushford and St. Charles), and extend the ticket program to eleven new libraries, serving a wide geographic area in the SELCO system (Austin, Caledonia, Houston, La Crescent, Lake City, LeRoy, Northfield, Rochester, the Rochester Public School Library, Spring Grove and Zumbrota). The Festival also intends to enhance the play going experience for Library Ticket Program participants by encouraging partnering libraries to schedule one or more GRSF workshops currently available through SELCO’s Vetted Programs Catalog .
By offering tickets through participating libraries, the Festival makes it possible for library patrons and specifically targeted, underserved populations to attend the productions for free, providing arts access to the citizens of Minnesota in the spirit of the Legacy Amendment.
There is still room available for the May 12th workshop with April Sutor from United Way of Olmstead County. In addition to filling out outcomes for grants, this is a great way to tell your funders exactly what you are accomplishing with the funding you receive. Don’t miss this opportunity to add another advocacy tool to your skills. Register by visiting the SELCO training site.
The library community has begun to prepare and share "white papers" outlining positions on the Minnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor Report on Public Libraries .
The State Library Advisory Council endorsed the OLA recommendations in a prepared response and offered additional items for consideration. The Advisory Council's statement was presented to the the Minnesota House of Representatives' Cultural and Outdoor Resources Finance Division on Monday, April 19, 2010. The State Library Council is comprised of appointees from each of Minnesota's Congressional districts.
The Council of Regional Public Library Administrators (CRPLSA ) endorsed the four recommendations and in a short statement outlined key factors that need to be considered when implementing local plans. CRPLSA membership includes the 12 directors responsible for managing Minnesota 12 regional public library systems.

Building Community Connections Through Collaboration
The Kasson Public Library (KPL) will partner with the Kasson-Mantorville High School architectural (CAD) class to design a larger, functional library facility using an existing vacant building. This design project is as an academic exercise for a hypothetical library design. After the Request for Design (RFD) has been announced, students will be given a list of needs to be incorporated in their designs for a functional library. They are advised to visit area libraries to observe how library space is utilized and how patrons use library services. The students are also advised to consult with the KPL director and a board trustee for additional guidance to be used in their designs as they are being developed. The student designs, when submitted, will be reviewed by the Library Director and the KPL Board of Trustees. Two designs will be chosen that best meet the needs of a larger, functional library and stipends will be awarded to the two students with the best designs. The stipends will be announced and the winning designs will be on display at the time of K-M’s graduation ceremony (June 6, 2010). The winning designs will also be on public display at the library and other sites throughout the KPL service area during the summer of 2010.
